LLISWERRY PONDSPECIES -Bream-Carp-Roach-Tench-Pike
LOCATION
Off Libeneth Road, Lliswerry, Newport
Near the railway line the quarrying excavations went down well below ground level, and when an underground stream was struck it flooded to produced Lliswerry Pond, which at its deepest point is 25 ft. There is a good head of carp which run to mid-twenties. Good bags of roach and skimmers can be had on the waggler while Tench have been caught to 6lb+. There are a few large Pike to be had from the right area while Jacks can usually be fooled by a well worked lure.
MORGANS POOLSPECIES -Bream-Carp-Roach-Rudd-Tench
LOCATION
Just off Maplas Road onto Bettws Lane, Newport.
Morgans Pond is a 5 acre man-made lake situated in the same complex as Woodstock Pool and consistently provides the carp-fisherman with action, with both Carp and giant slabs. Fish of 20lb+ are not uncommon with plenty of mid doubles backing them up. Tench are also present to 7lb and can usually be caught on boiles or the classic sweetcorn as hookbait. There are also a few Pike present which usually fall to a lure rather than a static deadbait.
SPYTTY STADIUM POOLSPECIES - Carp-Roach-Rudd-Perch-Tench
LOCATION
Next to Tennis Centre, Newport International Sports Village
One of the smaller waters on the card. Spytty Pond can throw up some good fish with some double figure Carp offering a good challenge if you enjoy surface fishing. There is also some good sport to be had from the silverfish with Roach being caught to just over the 1lb mark in the past.
WOODSTOCK POOLSPECIES - Bream-Carp-Roach-Rudd-Tench-Pike
LOCATION
Just off Maplas Road onto Bettws Lane, Newport.
Woodstock Pool is a 3 acre man-made lake situated in the same complex as Morgans Pond which has benefited from a re-stocking back in 2005 when a number of F1's and skimmer were introduced providing some good sport on the waggler or pole. Resident Carp are known to have come out to upper-twenties with boilies being the usual choice of bait. Bream are also present in good numbers with the odd fish pushing that elusive 10lb mark. Tench up to 5-6lb can usually be caught on corn while the Pike offer some great sport on lures and spinners.
RIVER WYE - BIGSWEIRSPECIES - Barbel-Chub-Dace-Roach-Pike
NAA now have a continuous stretch of about 2.5 miles - both banks above and below Bigsweir bridge - which is officially known as the 'Bigsweir' fishery (Not lower Bigsweir as that does not technically exist). the season is from the 18th October to the 2nd March.
There is a new fishery rule in place which MUST be adhered to and should not pose any real problems as the stretch is 'members only' i.e.NO DAY TICKETS. Anyone parking in either Wyeseal Farm or the old railway station carpark on Bigsweir Bridge, MUST display their NAA licence in the windscreen of their vehicle so that the fishery owners can see that the car belongs to a NAA member. Please remember to shut all gates when you access the fishery.
The stretch opposite Wyeseal is often known as Tump farm and whilst Bigsweir Estates own the fishery, the field that you can park in is owned by Tump farm (salmon cottage I think its called). So whilst you can fish there if you want to park your car you may be charged, They should NOT charge you for the fishing.
It is effective from 18th October this year.
PLEASE NOTE: DAY TICKETS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON ANY STRETCH OF THE RIVER WYE. IT IS NOW MEMBERS ONLY!
RIVER WYE - SYMONDS YATSPECIES - Barbel-Chub-Dace-Roach-Pike
The great River Wye's fame as a productive salmon fishery has traditionally overshadowed its enormous potential for coarse species but this is gradually being discovered by those in the know. Barbel are present to double figures in this fast flowing stretch and can usually be caught on standard tactics while there are also some very large Pike to be had for those willing to search out the hot spots, 20lb fish are not uncommon and are backed up by plenty of doubles. Chub can also offer some great action when fishing a maggot feeder and quivertip.
PLEASE NOTE: DAY TICKETS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON ANY STRETCH OF THE RIVER WYE. IT IS NOW MEMBERS ONLY!
RIVER EBBW - MAESGLASSPECIES - Chub-Dace-Roach-Trout
Often, the best approach on the River Ebbw is to travel light and move around until you find the fish. Trotted worm and maggot seem to be a preferred approach, though fish have been caught using standard feeder approaches. Roach and Dace are present in good numbers with a few nice Chub there aswell.
MONMOUTHSHIRE CANALSPECIES - Bream-Carp-Roach-Rudd-Tench
Good sport can be had on the Monmouthshire Canal using simple float tactics for Roach and Skimmer with a few bigger Bream on occasions. There are also a few small Pike lurking in the weed that can usually be caught on a spinner or lure.
